  119.      INTRODUCTION & QUICK START

  122.      GRAPHCAT requires  WordPerfect for Windows, any  version from 5.2
  123.      through 7.0, running in Windows 3.0,  3.1, or Windows 95. It is a
  124.      WordPerfect  add-in product that reads any disk or directory, and
  125.      creates a pictorial listing of all the graphics found.
  126.  
  127.      Setup
  128.      -----
  129.      In  each version of WordPerfect,  go to a  blank document screen,
  130.      press Macro (Alt-F10), type the path to where the files are,  and
  131.      the macro name shown here, and press Enter.
  132.  
  133.      For  WordPerfect 7.0, press Macro, type the path and 'setup7' and
  134.      press Enter.
  135.      For WordPerfect 6.1, 6.0a, and 6.0, use 'setup6'.
  136.      For WordPerfect 5.2 and 5.2+, use 'setup5'.
  137.  
  138.      For  example, to  install  Graphcat  in  WordPerfect  7,  from  a
  139.      diskette in drive a,  press Macro(Alt-F10), type 'a:\setup7', and
  140.      press Enter.

  142.      Next,  run  the  main  macro  by  pressing  Macro,  and  entering
  143.      GRAPHCAT. Answer the  prompts for the  drive and directory,  file
  144.      mask, catalog title,  number of columns, and  graphic height. The
  145.      default values for columns and height allow 28 graphics per page,
  146.      and there are  default values  for every entry  (except the  file
  147.      directory in  WPWin52), so  you can  just  click on  OK, NEXT  or
  148.      FINISH  to  accept  the defaults  as  you  learn  the power  that
  149.      Graphcat brings to clip art catalogs.

  235.      or if the sizes and dates do not match that list, the package has

  289.      Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  290.      before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  291.      using it, you are legally required to register. With
  292.      registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue

  454.      WHAT IS GRAPHCAT?

  457.      I've been collecting clip art for different projects. A small
  458.      book, some newsletters, signs, and still more pictorial projects.
  459.      I've drawn some, scanned some paper clip art, and bought some
  460.      disks of pictures. I was beginning to lose track of which disk
  461.      had what pictures. I needed an index, a printout of every graphic
  462.      I had, so I could keep them handy for reference.
  463.  
  464.      The WPG files shipped with WordPerfect have their own printed
  465.      picture indexes of art in the manual, but disks of PCX or CGM
  466.      files from computer show rack vendors are escapees from that
  467.      elusive paperless office we all keep hearing about. And clip art
  468.      disks are uneven; some of them are full disks of excellent art on
  469.      related topics, but others are totally unrelated pictures. Worse,
  470.      because there are several flavors of each of the graphics file
  471.      formats, some files will not be recognized by WordPerfect, and
  472.      will read as bad. Overall, clip art disks are worthwhile, but a
  473.      printed index would help sort the good files from the fuzzy junk.
  474.  
  475.      And the commercial clip art isn't much better. Oh, the graphics
  476.      are better, but the printed indexes are printed too small, or on
  477.      newsprint, or are all mixed in with the pictures of every other
  478.      graphic collection sold by that company.
  479.  
  480.      Meanwhile, my co-workers on a newsletter project wanted to see
  481.      all their clip art. I kept their graphics on a separate disk, but
  482.      they wanted paper copies to refer to, so they could tell me, "Use
  483.      that butterfly picture from page two." I began to create a sample
  484.      document, with every graphic shown, and the file names, and the
  485.      disk titles, and immediately found that there was too much work
  486.      involved. I had two options: I could delegate the job, or write a
  487.      macro to do the job. Since I couldn't find anyone who would spend
  488.      three hours to create the index for each disk, I wrote GRAPHCAT.
  489.      It's a lot faster than an assistant; it only takes from a few
  490.      seconds to a few minutes to complete the job, depending on the
  491.      speed of the computer and the size of the graphics files.
  492.  
  493.      GRAPHCAT makes this task easy, so easy that nearly no effort is
  494.      needed to create a new catalog for each directory or floppy of
  495.      pictures. If the macro is told the drive and path of the files,
  496.      the computer should do the rest.
  497.  
  498.      With just that information, the WordPerfect macro reads the
  499.      appropriate directory, identifies the graphics files, sets their
  500.      sizes, locations, and options in a catalog, and leaves that
  501.      catalog ready to print. Once the catalog is built, you may
  502.      preview it, print it, and save it if you want. However, I don't

  510.      recommend saving these files because they will be slightly larger
  511.      than the cumulative size of all the graphics in the directory.
  512.  
  513.      Since starting to catalog my clip art collection, I've found
  514.      pictures I didn't know I had, and I've used some of those in new
  515.      projects. Now that I don't have to hire extra help to create the
  516.      listings, I can find the picture I want in no time, and, better
  517.      yet, I can take the picture notebook with me to a co-worker, a
  518.      client, or a conference, and I don't need to borrow someone
  519.      else's computer and be at the mercy of someone else's operating
  520.      system.

  523.      WORDPERFECT 7, 6 OR 5.2? (NEW FEATURES)
  524.      ---------------------------------------

  526.      Throughout this manual, when the keystrokes and procedures are
  527.      the same for both WordPerfect versions, the steps will be listed
  528.      only once. However, when the steps are different, you will see
  529.      this:
  530.      WPWin52: Do these steps in WordPerfect for Windows 5.2 or 5.2+.
  531.      WPWin6/7: Or these in WordPerfect for Windows 7.0, 6.1 6.0a, or
  532.      6.0.
  533.  
  534.      WPWin6 has greatly enhanced macro power, so there are a few
  535.      features available in the WPWin6 version of Graphcat that are not
  536.      in the 5.2 edition. Similarly, WPWin 7 adds support for
  537.      Windows-95-style long filenames. The WPWin6 version has these
  538.      enhancements: 1) The file directory to search can be selected by
  539.      clicking on the file icon, and double-clicking on the directory
  540.      name. 2) The extra options screen allows partial file catalogs
  541.      for inventorying large directories of clip art. 3) Horizontal-
  542.      format catalogs (left-to-right) are available as an option in
  543.      WPWin6. The WPWin7 version has all the enhancements above, plus
  544.      support of long filenames for your graphics, shown as endnotes.
  545.  
  546.      Every question has a default setting in Graphcat for Windows. For
  547.      the easiest use of Graphcat, type the file path at the first
  548.      prompt, and press [Enter]. Graphcat will handle everything else.
  549.  
  550.      GRAPHCAT should work properly with ANY WP/Win language module.
  551.      However, I have not been able to test every possible
  552.      international combination of software and hardware. Please write
  553.      if you find that GRAPHCAT fails in any way on your system.

  569.      Writing software in a macro language is like controlling a
  570.      rowboat by towing it from a distance of five parsecs. GRAPHCAT
  571.      should work in all future releases of WP/Win BUT, sometimes new
  572.      "features" disable old features. When this happens, try turning
  573.      "off" the new features if GRAPHCAT doesn't seem to like the new
  574.      release. Better yet, call or write for support--there will be
  575.      either a fix or a new release, as needed, to fix any problems
  576.      caused by new features. For example:
  577.  
  578.      Due to feature changes in WPWin60 interim release "a" and after,
  579.      versions of Graphcat 3.0 and 3.01 will fail before completing any
  580.      catalog pages. That compatibility issue has been allowed for in
  581.      versions 3.1 & above of Graphcat, which can run in all editions
  582.      of WPWin 6.0 & 6.1 & 7.0 for Windows.
  583.  
  584.      Also fixed are incompatibilities from version 3.00 with full
  585.      justification in default initial codes, as seen in some UK
  586.      editions of WPWin60, and error messages that appear when the
  587.      older Graphcat was used with the Share program, noted mostly by
  588.      users of MS Excel.
  589.  
  590.      NEW SINCE VERSION 3.0
  591.      ---------------------
  592.  
  593.      Those users who use more than four columns in their catalogs
  594.      sometimes find that the image names wrap or hyphenate to two
  595.      lines, throwing off the neat line-ups of images on the page.
  596.      Graphcat running in WPWin6/7 automatically shrinks the base font
  597.      for the document to make it fit into one line. The point size of
  598.      the page title is not affected. New in 3.2: Non-scalable fonts
  599.      can also be auto-adjusted; Graphcat adds the small or fine
  600.      attributes as needed.
  601.  
  602.      New in 4.0:
  603.      Support for WordPerfect 7.0, including long filename support.
  604.      The default settings have changed: In WPWin6 & 7, Graphcat now
  605.      defaults to the "Graphic on disk" selection, and the default
  606.      catalog is now set at 100 images (28 in evaluation edition).

  608.      INSTALLATION

  611.      If you are reading these files on screen, you may print them with
  612.      the PRINTDOC.BAT batch file. (Don't print them from WordPerfect--
  613.      they are formatted with page breaks for printing from DOS.)
  614.      The easiest way to run the PRINTDOC batch file is to go to DOS by
  615.      double-clicking on the MS-DOS prompt icon, usually installed in
  616.

  626.      From the DOS prompt, log to the directory holding the Graphcat
  627.      distribution files, type PRINTDOC, and press ENTER.
  628.  
  629.      SAVING HARD DRIVE SPACE
  630.      -----------------------
  631.      For either the WP7, WP6, or WP52 versions of Graphcat, there are
  632.      two files that must remain on your hard drive to be used. If you
  633.      install more than one version, each version of WordPerfect will
  634.      have its own files. These files are GRAPHCAT.WCM, GRAPHCAT.DLL
  635.      (for WPWin52 and 6x), and GRAPHCAT.EXE (for WPWin7). The SETUP
  636.      macros will copy those files for you, and will also create a
  637.      directory for the optional clip art samples and instruction
  638.      files. These routines will copy the samples and TXT files to any
  639.      location you wish.
  640.  
  641.      The clip art images and TXT files need not remain on your hard
  642.      disk once you have become comfortable with running the software.
  643.      The macros and `dll' and `exe' file must remain in the WP/Win
  644.      macro directories.

  678.      PROMPTS
  679.      =======

  681.      Start GRAPHCAT by pressing Macro (Alt-F10), typing GRAPHCAT, and
  682.      pressing Enter. You must have at least two document screens
  683.      available, but not to worry: GRAPHCAT checks for workspace and
  684.      will not let you do anything dangerous. A full-screen dialog box
  685.      will appear, asking five questions. All of these questions are
  686.      optional, and allow you to customize your catalogs.
  687.  
  688.      At the first prompt, enter the drive name and path for the
  689.      subdirectory to be searched. You may omit the ending backslash if
  690.      you like. GRAPHCAT is smart enough to accept the path name either
  691.      way. Pressing Cancel (Esc) or clicking the Cancel button at any
  692.      time will end the macro.
  693.  
  694.           The file directory to search can be selected by clicking on
  695.           the file icon, and double-clicking on the directory name.
  696.  
  697.      The second prompt asks for the file mask. Any type of graphics
  698.      file readable by WordPerfect may be entered here. What's a file
  699.      mask? The simplest file mask is the famous "*.*" which means the
  700.      files with any name and any extension. The asterisk substitutes
  701.      for any group of characters, and a question mark substitutes for
  702.      any single character. The period is required.
  703.  
  704.      For example, to inventory all the WPG clip art in a directory,
  705.      use a file mask of "*.WPG" or to find all the files starting with
  706.      "BIG-" use "BIG-*.*" as the answer at the second prompt. If you
  707.      leave this prompt blank, Graphcat will look at "*.*" or all the
  708.      files in the directory.
  709.  
  710.           It's very easy to just enter *.* as the file mask and try to
  711.           search every file in a directory for graphics. Don't do it!
  712.           The wild card extension is intended for cataloging mixed
  713.           disks of graphics files. If you use the *.* choice for
  714.           directories containing program files, GRAPHCAT will run far
  715.           more slowly, because it must load and identify as bad every
  716.           program file in the directory. For best and fastest results,
  717.           use the real file mask of the graphics you are looking for,
  718.           unless you really do intend *.* to mean ALL the files in the
  719.           directory.
  720.  
  721.      The third prompt asks for a title, and the macro will place that
  722.      title in a header on each page of the catalog. I recommend
  723.      entering the name of the graphics collection or the name of the
  724.      archived backup for that collection, such as "Business Graphics--
  725.      BUSINESS.ZIP" in this area. You may leave this prompt blank if
  726.      you wish, and Graphcat will create a title for you, reading "Clip
  727.      Art in " and the file mask from the second prompt.

  734.      The next two prompts request the number of columns and the height
  735.      to make each graphic. WordPerfect will calculate the width to
  736.      keep the graphics true to scale, room permitting. If less than
  737.      about twice the height of a graphic is available for the width,
  738.      some graphics in horizontal format will be compressed to fit the
  739.      column. For four columns, a height of about one inch or 2.5 cm 
  740.      allows ample room, and 28 images fit on one page. Some of the
  741.      best combinations of columns and image heights are displayed near
  742.      the right side of the dialog box.
  743.  
  744.           INTERNATIONAL USERS IN WPWin52 & 6x: GRAPHCAT needs to know
  745.           how tall you would like your graphics printed in your
  746.           catalog. That measurement is entered in inches if the
  747.           language WordPerfect detects is US English. For all other
  748.           languages, including other varieties of English, centimeters
  749.           are used automatically. If you would like to use a different
  750.           measurement, you must add a measurement identification
  751.           letter after the number, using the standard WordPerfect
  752.           abbreviations. For example, i or " for inches, c for
  753.           centimeters, or p for points.
  754.  
  755.           WPWin7: GRAPHCAT now uses a counter control in WPWin7 to
  756.           allow you to click the image height up or down, and that
  757.           control is set in inches if you are running US English, and
  758.           centimeters otherwise.
  759.  
  760.      Once the last entry has been made, click on OK or NEXT, and
  761.      GRAPHCAT will go on to the Options menu. As each graphic is
  762.      loaded, the macro announces the new graphic on the bottom line of
  763.      the document screen.
  764.  
  765.      THE OPTIONS DIALOG BOX & CD-ROM SUPPORT (WPWIN6/7 ONLY)
  766.      =======================================================
  767.  
  768.      Graphics collections have gotten very large. I frequently hear
  769.      from customers that they have several thousand images in one
  770.      directory, and that they want to inventory that one big directory
  771.      as one group. That is impractical for many reasons, but the most
  772.      important reason to break a catalog up into pieces is that you
  773.      cannot expect WordPerfect to run smoothly with ten megabytes of
  774.      image files in its document memory. It just won't happen.
  775.  
  776.      You can create a partial catalog in WPWin6/7 by entering your
  777.      choices on the options menu, which will appear automatically once
  778.      you complete the first dialog box. The menu has three items to
  779.      fill in. In most cases, you will be able to click on OK
  780.      immediately without making any changes here.

  793.      This is the file name to begin the catalog with. You may manually
  794.      type in the name of the image, or you may choose the name from a
  795.      file list (recommended!) by clicking on the file icon or by
  796.      pressing Alt-Down Arrow.

  798.      You may also enter a partial file name here. For example, to
  799.      start the catalog with the first image starting with the letter
  800.      "G", you would just type that letter here.
  801.  
  802.      This box will start out as blank the first time that you run
  803.      Graphcat in a directory, or the first time in a WordPerfect
  804.      session. However, if you run Graphcat again in the same
  805.      directory, this box will automatically hold the next file name to
  806.      catalog, if the last catalog was of fewer graphics than those
  807.      remaining in the directory.
  808.  
  809.      NUMBER OF IMAGES (WPWIN6/7 ONLY)
  810.      --------------------------------
  811.  
  812.      Select how many images to catalog here. The default is 60, but
  813.      you will probably choose to catalog your images in groups of 56
  814.      (2 pages of 28 images in 4 columns) or some other number that
  815.      will fill a set of pages. This number will carry over from one
  816.      run of Graphcat to the next, within the same WP session.
  817.  
  818.      PAGE NUMBER (WPWIN6/7 ONLY)
  819.      ---------------------------
  820.  
  821.      Select what page number to use for the first page of the catalog.
  822.      If you are cataloging the same directory as a previous run,
  823.      Graphcat will provide a default choice of the last page that was
  824.      created, plus one.
  825.  
  826.      CD-ROM SUPPORT (WPWIN6/7 ONLY)
  827.      ------------------------------
  828.  
  829.      For cataloging a large group of files, and especially for CD-ROM
  830.      clip art disks, set Graphcat to catalog as many images as will
  831.      fill one page, or a multiple of pages, with no partial pages.
  832.      Print the catalog normally when done, and restart Graphcat. Press
  833.      (Enter) at both screens, and Graphcat will prepare the next set
  834.      of images, creating a catalog of the same size as the first, and
  835.      starting with the next image to be cataloged, and the next page
  836.      number. Graphcat can work all the way through a CD-ROM in this
  837.      way, simply by breaking up the catalogs into printable sizes.

  846.      IN GENERAL
  847.      ----------
  848.  
  849.      If GRAPHCAT and WordPerfect decide that a graphic in your sample
  850.      directory is not a proper graphics file, GRAPHCAT will add that
  851.      file name to a list of files that could not be loaded, and that
  852.      list will be printed at the end of the catalog. You may delete
  853.      that message after the catalog is prepared, or you may try to
  854.      convert the bad graphic or edit it with a graphics program,
  855.      resave it, and run GRAPHCAT again. Because not every version of
  856.      every graphic format is supported by WordPerfect, I prefer to
  857.      leave the file list in the catalog to identify a file that may be
  858.      usable in other software, but not in WordPerfect. (Or the disk
  859.      may contain non-graphic files, such as a README.DOC, and these
  860.      files will be listed automatically at the end of the catalog.)
  861.  
  862.      When the catalog is finished, a dialog box will appear to let you
  863.      know. From this point on, the catalog is just a complex document,
  864.      and you may edit it or print it as you would any other large
  865.      document.
  866.  
  867.      GRAPHCAT may be stopped in mid-inventory by pressing Cancel (Esc)
  868.      just once; there may be a time lag of a few seconds before the
  869.      macro stops. If you use Cancel to stop GRAPHCAT, the macro will 
  870.      warn you that the catalog is incomplete.
  871.  
  872.      GRAPHCAT has error trapping routines built in to prevent garbage
  873.      entries, and to turn off Reveal Codes if needed, and will not try
  874.      to run if you start them without sufficient work space. If you
  875.      wish to import the catalog into a document, run the macro first,
  876.      and then merge the other text or formatting into the catalog.
  877.  
  878.           In general, Graphcat can create a larger catalog of
  879.           graphics than WordPerfect can print. The maximum
  880.           catalog size for each user will vary greatly, depending
  881.           mostly on memory. Try not to catalog more images than
  882.           will fit in memory. Although WordPerfect will use disk
  883.           space as extra workspace after memory is full,
  884.           performance and speed will drop dramatically, and your
  885.           results will be both faster and more reliable if you
  886.           split large catalogs up into several separate mini-
  887.           catalogs.

  902.      EDITING AND PRINTING TIPS

  905.      COLOR CLIP ART
  906.      --------------
  907.      WordPerfect for Windows 5.2 does not support color while using a
  908.      WordPerfect printer driver, unless the printer uses color
  909.      Postscript. For any other color printer, a color catalog of clip
  910.      art is available, but you must use a Windows printer driver to
  911.      print in color on non-Postscript color printers. WPWin6 supports
  912.      color on most color printers.
  913.  
  914.  
  915.      HORIZONTALLY SQUASHED IMAGES
  916.      ----------------------------
  917.      If your images appear to be squashed horizontally when you print
  918.      or preview, you need to use either fewer columns or a smaller
  919.      image height. To change the height of the images, clear the
  920.      document and restart GRAPHCAT. You can change the columns without
  921.      rerunning GRAPHCAT, but if you are not comfortable with using the
  922.      Reveal Codes feature, it may be easier to simply run Graphcat
  923.      again with the new columns setting than to edit the completed
  924.      document. First, press Ctrl-Home to reach the extreme top of the
  925.      document, before any codes. Turn on Reveal Codes (Alt-F3), and
  926.      look for a code that looks like this:
  927.      [Col Def: Newspaper...
  928.  
  929.      Place the cursor immediately after that code, and press Layout,
  930.      Columns, Define from the menu. Change the number of columns and
  931.      click on OK. You may now delete the first of the two column
  932.      definition codes, turn off Reveal Codes (Alt-F3), and check your
  933.      document by printing or previewing again. The images should no
  934.      longer be squashed, but with extremely wide images, you may need
  935.      to try still fewer columns, or perhaps none at all.
  936.  
  937.      WRAPPED FILE NAMES
  938.      ------------------
  939.  
  940.      When using more than four columns in WP52, long graphics names
  941.      may wrap to the next line, reducing the number of graphics that
  942.      fit on a page. If the names wrap, reset the base font to a
  943.      narrow, condensed, or thin typeface, using Layout, Document,
  944.      Initial Font, choosing a smaller font, and clicking OK when done.
  945.  
  946.  
  947.      LANDSCAPE PRINTING
  948.      ------------------
  949.  
  950.      If GRAPHCAT detects any codes in your document, even a page
  951.      definition, it will open a new document before creating your
  952.

  959.      unchanged. So if you need a graphics catalog on a page size that
  960.      is not your default paper size, such as a landscape version of A4
  961.      or 8 1/2" x 11", then follow these steps:
  962.  
  963.      First, run GRAPHCAT normally. Choose one column so that GRAPHCAT
  964.      will not insert a column definition code. Next, press Ctrl-Home
  965.      to go to the top of the document. If you have turned off the Auto
  966.      Code Placement option in Preferences, you must also use the left
  967.      arrow key to position the insertion point before ALL of the
  968.      formatting codes. Select your paper size from the list available
  969.      after choosing Layout, Page, Paper Size. Click on Select when
  970.      done.
  971.  
  972.      Next, add column codes, by choosing Layout, Columns, Define,
  973.      entering the number of columns, and clicking OK. You may also
  974.      wish to reduce the space between columns at the Distance Between
  975.      Columns menu choice. Choose Layout, Columns, Columns On to turn
  976.      on columns, and then press Ctrl-End to go to the bottom of the
  977.      document. WordPerfect will reformat your document as it travels.
  978.      Your document is now ready to edit, view, or print normally.

  1017.      1) "In WP 7, some of my image captions are all UPPER case, and
  1018.      some are Mixed Upper and lower case. These files are saved with
  1019.      regular DOS 8+3 (filename.ext) filenames."
  1020.  
  1021.      No. They're not. A legal 8+3 filename is always all upper case.
  1022.      However, when you started using Windows 95, and thought you were
  1023.      saving files with legal MS-DOS filenames, Windows 95 was busily
  1024.      saving them as you typed them, in lower case, or with a
  1025.      capitalized first letter, like Filename.wpg. Windows 95 feeds as
  1026.      all caps to 16-bit programs like WordPerfect 5.1 or 6.1, but
  1027.      WordPerfect 7 and Graphcat 4.0 can read the mixed case names.
  1028.  
  1029.      GRAPHCAT handles long filenames like this: If the Windows 95
  1030.      "long" filename is the same length as a DOS filename, of 12
  1031.      characters or less, it uses that filename as the image caption.
  1032.      If it is longer than 12 characters, it uses the DOS version of
  1033.      the name (LONGFIL~.TXT) for the caption, and places the full-
  1034.      length file name in an endnote.
  1035.  
  1036.      2) "Whoa! I just upgraded to WP7 and Graphcat 4.0 from an earlier
  1037.      Graphcat in another WP, and now my catalogs look different!"
  1038.  
  1039.      Sometimes, yes. Vertical-format catalogs have changed from
  1040.      Newspaper-style columns, that fill each column before going on to
  1041.      the next, to BALANCED Newspaper columns, where WP 7 attempts to
  1042.      keep all the column lengths the same on each page. It succeeds
  1043.      most of the time, but not always. For catalogs of more than one
  1044.      page, only the last page looks different.
  1045.  
  1046.      Why the change? Easy enough. The endnotes needed to list long
  1047.      filenames don't work well in Newspaper columns, unless you LIKE
  1048.      reading filenames that are hyphenated four or five times. 
  1049.  
  1050.      If your catalog doesn't contain any long filenames, you can
  1051.      easily change it back to Newspaper style: just run Graphcat
  1052.      normally, and then go to the top of the catalog, turn on Reveal
  1053.      Codes (Alt-F3), double-click on the code starting with '[Col.Def'
  1054.      and click on the top selection of column types, Newspaper, and
  1055.      then on OK. You might need to go down to the bottom of the
  1056.      catalog once (Control-End) to convince WP to reformat the pages.
  1057.  
  1058.      2) "GRAPHCAT loads properly, and the big box appears on screen,
  1059.      but once I click on OK, an error message appears telling me that
  1060.      the macro could not find the DLL file."
  1061.  
  1062.      This applies to WP52 and 6x, but there is a similar message for a
  1063.      GRAPHCAT.EXE file in WP7. You must run the SETUP macro to place
  1064.

  1071.      do. See the installation instructions on page 3 for help.

  1073.      3) "GRAPHCAT runs perfectly, but I cannot print the result file.
  1074.      The error messages say I don't have enough disk space, or that
  1075.      the swap file is full, or WPWin7 says a memory error has
  1076.      occurred."
  1077.  
  1078.      This can happen if you are trying to catalog a large file of clip
  1079.      art, and you have very little memory or hard disk space available
  1080.      for WordPerfect to work in. To fix it, from the Windows Program
  1081.      Manager, highlight the WP icon, and choose File, Properties. If
  1082.      you have another hard drive partition available with more space,
  1083.      such as D: or E:, change the Working Directory prompt to that
  1084.      drive, click on OK, and restart WordPerfect. If there is no other
  1085.      partition, you will need to move or delete unneeded files from
  1086.      your hard disk to free up some work space.
  1087.  
  1088.      In WPWin6 or 7, you should try breaking the catalog into page-
  1089.      size chunks; see the Options Menu instructions on page 14.
  1090.      Setting the graphics quality to medium or draft also helps reduce
  1091.      the amount of data that must be handled for each page, and
  1092.      eliminates some problems.
  1093.  
  1094.      Remember that printing images smaller does NOT reduce the amount
  1095.      of memory they use during printing. A page containing fewer large
  1096.      images is easier to print than one with many small images.
  1097.  
  1098.      4) "My catalogs print very slowly, or only half the page prints."
  1099.  
  1100.      A page full of graphics will print slowly, and most laser
  1101.      printers do not come equipped with enough internal memory to
  1102.      print a complex catalog at the highest resolution settings. On a
  1103.      laser printer, if the entire page does not print, try printing
  1104.      the page at a lower setting for graphics quality, or use fewer
  1105.      columns. Again, note that reducing the size of a graphic does not
  1106.      reduce the complexity of the print job, so a page with one column
  1107.      of larger graphics will print more quickly than a page containing
  1108.      several columns of small graphics.
  1109.  
  1110.      The newer laser printers frequently use standard SIMM modules, so
  1111.      adding memory can be very cheap--check the printer manual to see
  1112.      if it requires a proprietary cartridge or a standard SIMM. Adding
  1113.      4 Mb of RAM to a printer is usually fine for letter-sized
  1114.      printouts with full-page graphics at 600 dots per inch.
  1115.  
  1116.      5) "Sometimes when I use the *.* file mask, GRAPHCAT loads a file
  1117.      as a graphic that isn't one. The document loads and prints
  1118.      normally, but the box is either empty or contains a random
  1119.      pattern. Or, and much worse, WordPerfect progresses partially
  1120.

  1127.      General Protection Fault (usually WPWIN52)."

  1129.      Both conditions are caused by trying to use the *.* file mask
  1130.      option inappropriately. The * wild card choice was intended for
  1131.      reading disks containing mixed graphics in different formats,

  1133.      attempting to load every program file on your hard drive in the
  1134.      attempt to see if any of them are graphics. GRAPHCAT will
  1135.      correctly identify nearly every file as a graphic or not a
  1136.      graphic, but there are exceptions.
  1137.  
  1138.      The General Protection Fault does not occur often, unless an odd
  1139.      combination of factors is present, such as a bad file combined
  1140.      with either the SHARE command in use, or a Hyphenation ON code in
  1141.      the Document Initial Codes area of Preferences. Solution: Don't
  1142.      run SHARE unless you are running software or hardware that
  1143.      specifically demands it, such as some network packages. Or remove
  1144.      that Hyphenation code from Document Initial Codes.
  1145.  
  1146.      To avoid these problems altogether, when cataloging a directory
  1147.      of mixed graphics and program files, use the appropriate file
  1148.      mask, such as *.PCX or *.WPG on the second line of GRAPHCAT's
  1149.      menu, and save the wild card use for disks holding almost
  1150.      entirely graphics.
